Halloween

 Mandy and I visited the pumpkin patch with Oliver last week. He was amazingly patient with Mom and Grandma taking pictures. He is such a good natured baby. He now wears a retainer to help bring the cleft together. It is taped to his little cheeks. Orthodontist day was a big rough. I suppose it hurts like it does with braces.

Below is a little wool wall quilt I made for Dad to hang on his apartment door. It was a block I designed for a block exchange. Since I have several sets of blocks this worked well. This one is based on an antique Halloween decoration. Normally I am not a fan of Halloween though I do love Day of the Dead. With Oliver's birthday being closer to Halloween Grandma might get more interested.

Mandy y yo visitamos el jardin de los calabazas la semana pasada. Oliver tenia mucha paciencia con mama y abuela tomando muchos fotos. Es un bebe muy bonachon. Ahora lleva una cosa en su boca para cerrar la hendidura de paladar. Tiene cinta adhesivo en sus cachetes para eso. El dia que visito con ortodoncista fue un poquito dificil. Imajino que los modificaciones le duele un poco.

La colcha pequena us parte de un intercambio de cuadritos. Lo termine y se lo regale a mi padre para colgarlo en la puerta de su departmento. Se baso en un decoracion antiguo. Normalente no me gusta "Halloween"pero me encanta El Dia de los Muertos. El cumpleanos de Oliver es tan cerca de Halloween que quizas seria mas interesante.

Autumn Travels - Viajes del Otoño

We have made trips to both Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks in the past month. I think incredible views and weather were the high lights of both trips. See for yourselves.

Glacier National Park, Labor Day Weekend (Sept 1-6)

Skies in the park were amazing.

We had a "friend" who visited the campground most days. He liked the berries in the shrubbery above the campground. Fortunately he stayed above us instead of 

coming too close to our tent.  Looks like he enjoyed watching us as much as we enjoyed watching him. 

Hemos visitado ambos de los parques nacionales Glacier y Yellowstone reciente. Creyo que las vistas increyibles y el clima estaban culminantes de los viajes. ¿Que piensas?

Cielos maravillosos.

Tenemos un "amigo" un oso quien nos visitaba casi cada día. El le gustaba las bayas arriba del campamento. Afortunadamente quedaba arriba en vez de visitando nuestra tienda de campaña. Nos gustaba mirarlo y el le gustaba mirarnos.  

 It is hard to tell from this picture but the streaks are 1/4" slushy hail that we hiked through for most of one morning. The ground was pretty white for awhile.

Es dificil ver los detalles en ese foto pero las vetas son 1/4" granizo. Anduvimos en eso por la mañana. La tierra fue blanca por varias horas.

The next day it got quite warm as we hiked through an area of the park that had burned about 5-6 years ago. It as interesting to see the recovery. This was on the Loop Trail to Granite Chalet.

El próximo día era más caliente y anduvimos por un área del parque que era quemado hace 5-6 años. La recuperación era interesante ver. Este es el Sendero de Lazada.

 Yellowstone National Park
(Oct 4-7)

We began our visit by driving the Beartooth Hiway. Can you find the Bear's tooth? We felt like we were on top of the world. Snow is last year's snow though it now has fresh snow.

Empezamos nuestra visita aquí manejando La Carretera del Diente de Oso. ¿Puedes encontrarlo? Parecía que estabamos encima del mundo. Ese nieve es del año pasado sin embargo hay nieve nuevo allí ahora.

Thursday we visited Old Faithful Geyser. Yes, that is snow on the ground. We drove through about 4 inches of accumulating snow, past 4 accidents, crossing the continental divide twice to get there. They closed the road behind us. Friday  all the roads in the park except one were closed due to snow. We were lucky to see the park this time of year since in a week these same roads will all be closed until spring. The fall color was beautiful. I don't think the erruption of Old Faithful was as tall as it is sometimes, perhaps because it errupted 30 minutes early.

I started making quilt blocks of the national parks a year ago and have gotten side tracked. I need to get back to that project but first we are going to visit Oliver!

Jueves visitamos el géiser de Fiel Viejo. Sí, hay nieve. Manejamos por 4" de nieve amontonando, pasado 4 accidentes, cruzando el divide continental dos veces. Cerraron el camino despues de eso. Viernes todos los caminos en el parque menos uno estaban cerrados. Tenemos suerte que pongamos ver el parque en este temporada. En pocos días estas caminos va a cerrar hasta la primavera. Los colores en el parque estaban espectacular. No creyo que la erupción fue tan alto como normal, quizas porque fue 30 minutos temprano. 

Hace un año empecé diseñar cuadro para una colcha de los parques nacionales que hemos visitado. Debo regresar a ese proyecto pero primero vamos a visitar Oliver!

Meet Oliver Finn Lie - Conozca Oliver Fin Lie

I'm a Grandma! Oliver Finn Lie was born at 1:31 am September 16, 2011 only 24 minutes after the kids got to the hospital. He weighs 7 pounds 11 ounces and is 20 inches long. He has two dimples like his dad and a very lusty voice. He is beginning to nurse and doing well.

Mandy's Mom arrives in Folsom today. We will be heading to California later in October.

Soy Abuelita! Oliver Fin  Lie nació a las 1:31 por la manaña el 16 de setiembre en 2011, solamente 24 minutos despues de las jovenes llegaron al hospital. Pesa 7 libras y 11 onzas y está 20 pulgadas largo. Tiene 2 hoyuelos como sus padre y una voz muy robusto. Empiece amamantar y hace bien.

La madre de Mandy llega hoy y vamos a ir al California en el medio de Octubre. 

Retired! - Jubilado

Toralf finally did it! He walked out of work Friday noon, August 26 for the last time. We are now officially retired. I love the Spanish word for retired, "jubilado." Reminds me of jubilation. It does seem to be a joyous word. Hope it is a joyous time as we enter a new phase in our lives.

We are actually going back to the office Tuesday morning for a farewell breakfast and then Wednesday heading for Glacier for 6 days. Haven't a clue what temps will be in the park, probably colder. It has been warm here in Missoula. We haven't been to Glacier in almost a year, too long. We are looking foreward to getting away and doing some hiking in the mountains. We will take our bikes, too.

Finalmente Toralf lo hace. Salió de  la oficina por la ultima vez viernes el 26 de agosto. Me gusta la palabra jubilado. Parece como júbilo. Ojalá que éste nuevo parte de nuestro vida es un tiempo de júbilo.

En realidad regresamos a la oficina el lunes para una fiesta de despedida. Miercoles vamos a Glacier Parque Nacional para acampar por 6 días. No tengo ningun idea de las temperaturas allá, probablemente más frio. Ha estado un poquito caliente en Missoula. No hemos estado en Glacier por casi un año, demasiado tiempo. Va a estar bien andor por las montañas de nuevo. Tendremos nuestros bicis tambien.

Iowa Visit - Visita a Iowa

I just returned a week or so ago from visiting my very best friend back in Iowa. Can't believe we have known each other for almost 30 years. This is the "old gang," The Dubuque Busy Quilters.  We spent an afternoon togther at Olive Garden catching up on old times. We missed you Lois and Bonnie!

Acabo de regresar de Iowa para visitar mi amiga mejor. Nos conocimos casi trenta años. Éste es el grupo, Colchadoras muy Ocupadas de Dubuque. Disfrutamos una tarde a un restorante hablando del grupo y familias del pasado y presente. Nos las faltan solamente Lois y Bonnie que como yo no viven en el área.  

This is a tranquil Mississippi River. Hard to

believe just a few days earlier the area received

15 inches of rain in less than 12 hours causing

a lot of flooding.

Last but not least I am thrillled to be able to report that my Little Baskets quilt (see July 4)

Éste es el rio Misisipi, muy tranquilo. Solamente una semana antes recibió 15 pulgadas de lluvia en menos de 12 horas con muchas inundaciónes.

Finalmente con mucho gusto puedo anunciar que mi colcha Cestas Poquitas (July 4) ganó el premio, mejor trabajo a mano en la categoría tecnicas mezcladas en el Meta de Hoffman 20ll.

Montana on bicycle, Vista de Montana

We have been bicycling Saturday and Sunday mornings before it gets hot. Last two Saturdays we have biked to market in downtown Missoula. It does limit what we can bring home to what we can carry in our baskets! Several Sundays we have biked south of town. This is just south of Lolo. Nice to be able to see the scenery in a more leisurely fashion. Can't believe how fall like everything is starting to look and feel.

Ibamos en bicycleta manañas de sábado y domingo antes de los días calentar. Los dos sábados pasados fuimos en bicycleta al mercado (de frutas y verduras) en el centro de Missoula. Limite las cosas que podemos traer en casa porque solaemente tenemos 2 cestas pequeños en nuestros bicycletas. Hace dos domingos fuimos en bicycleta al sur de Missoula. Era buen disfrutar las vistas más lento. Es dificil creer cuanto las vistas parezcan como otoño. 

Life In Montana - La Vida Aquí

 Dad had company from the southeast a week or so ago, people I used to baby sit for many years ago. They stayed here and I was their chauffeur for the week. We enjoyed visiting some of the local places near here and they enjoyed our mountains and much cooler weather. This is the Montana state flower, the bitterroot, that the valley just south of here is named for.

Mi padre tenia una visita hace una semana de amigos desde el sureste, gente que suele cuidar los niños cuando era joven. Quedaban aquí y yo fue sus chofer por la semana. Disfrutabamos visitando algo de los vistas cerca de aquí y ellos disfrutaban las montañas y la clima más fresco. Éste es la flor de nuestro estado, el bitterroot, que el valle al sur de aquí es nombrada.

Last Sunday morning Toralf and I went for a bike ride before it got warm. Biked from here down to the river and then along the river aways. You can just barely see the "M" on the mountain for the University of Montana. I liked the suspension bridge for bikers and walkers. River is still running a bit high and fast from late snow melt. Road to the Sun in Glacier Park just opened last week, one of the latest openings in history.

El domingo pasado Toralf & I fuimos en bibicletas hasta el río antes de la temperatura aumentaba. Puedes ver por poco el "M" de la Universidad de Montana en la distancia. Me gusta la puente en suspensión para los que andan en los pies o bicicletas. Todavía el río corre alto y muy rápido debido a nieve en los montañas que derrieten. El Camino al Sol en el Parque Glacier abierta la semana pasada, uno de las fechas mas tarde en la historia del parque.
