Playing in the Studio - Jugando en mi estudio

 I won a book at the Quilters Fun Nite at the AQS Quilt show in Lancaster. It is called Vivacious Curvy Quilts, by Diane Hire. I really didn't think too much about it but when I had my finger procedure I couldn't do much for a couple of days so I got caught up on reading including this book. The ideas started percolating and Firday I was able to go to my studio and start sewing. The following is the result. This isn't the finished piece but I'm keeping mum on the rest until later.

It has been really fun to play in my studio just because I want to rather than have to. This is before the sashing strips were sew on and is the correct orientation.

 Now I am ready to sew blocks together. This is upside down. What does it make you think of?

Gané un libro a la Noche Divertida para Quilters a La Exposición de Colchas en Lancaster. Se llama "Vivacious Curvy Quilts, by Diane Hire. No pensaba mucho en ésto pero la semana pasada cuando tuve una procedmiento en uno de mis dedos no podía hacer nada por un par de días. Leía mucho incluyendo éste libro. Los ideas empieza y viernes iniciaba coser. Éste es el resulto. No está terminada pero la proxima parte todavía es un secreto.

Mira el internet para más información sobre éste libro. Los colores de Diane son mucho más vivido. Creyo que éste técnica puede estar una classe por Skype. Que piensas? 

Trip to Lancaster, PA

 3 friends and I just returned from attending the AQS quilt show in Lancaster, PA. This is my friend Sue with her quilt "The Red Vase" that she entered in the show. Quilts were spectacular with exquisite quilting. Seems like almost all the wall quilts and many of the bed quilts were heavily beaded as well including Sue's wall quilt. 

The red purple quilt was part of a special exhibit of Amish quilts owned by the Esprit Corporation and donated to and displayed at the Lancaster Quilt Museum. The original red purple quilt that was the inspiration for the DBQ red purple "Our Amish Adventure" challenge way back in 1986???

3 amigas y yo acabamos de regresar de asistiendo la Concuso de Colchas de AQS en Lancaster, PA. Éste es mi amiga Sue con su colcha "El Florero Rojo" que fue una entrada en el concurso. Las colchas eran espectacular con quilting exquisito. Parecía casi todo las colchas para suspender y las de la cama tenían muchas gotas también incluyendo la colcha de Sue.

La colcha de roja y morada era parte de una expositión especial de colchas de los Amish que eran parte de la colección de corporación Esprit. Éstas colchas estaban exibido al Museo Lancaster de Colchas y Textiles.

La colcha original roja y morada que fue la inspiració para el roja morada meta del grupo DBQ "Nuestra Adventura de Amish" en 1986??? Recuerdas mi colcha "Jardin de Amish" que tiene un borde de uvas aplicadas?

AMISH COUNTRY

 





We spent several afternoons touring Amish country. It was quite a challenge to photograph the fast moving wagons and horses. Enjoyed visiting the Amish shops selling fabric and quilts often mixed with groceries, bulk food, hats etc.

Pasamos varios tardes recorriendo el campo del Amish. Fue una meta para sacar una foto de los carritos y cabellos. Disfrutamos visitas en las tienditas del Amish que venden telas y colchas y muchas veces abarrotes, sombreros, ropa etc.

GETTYSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK

Our next stop was Gettysburg National Military Park, the site of the 3 day battle of Gettysburg as well as the military cemetary and site of Lincoln's Gettysburg address. We found it a very moving experience, hard to comprehend the numbers of soldiers who were killed or wounded there from both sides. There was a hush to the whole park, sacred ground.

El proximo destino fue Parque Nacional Militar, el lugar de batalla de 3 días en Gettysburg y también el cementario militar y sitio del Discurso de Gettysburg, undiscurso muy famoso en los EEUU. Fue un experiencia muy emocionante para nosotros. Es dificil comprendar los numeros de muertos y heridos. En todo el parque experimentamos un silencio profundo. Es un lugar sagrado.



WINTERTHUR MUSEUM

Last stop was Winterthur Museum former home of one of the Duponts and his extensive collection of American antiques, including many textiles and his wonderful gardens. We Montanas were starved for spring and he delivered so wonderfully. Couldn't believe the size of the daffodils! 

Nuestra última visita fue El Museo Winterthur antiguo casa de uno de los Duponts y su colección de antigüedades de America, incluyendo muchas textiles y sus jardines maravillosos. Llegando de Montana todaví nos falta la primavera y aquí estaban jardines y flores en profusion. No podemos creer el temaño de los narcisos!

9-patch Posies

While reading a friend's blog at loisarnold.blogspot.com  I was reminded of this quilt finished in 2001. It is all made of old scraps. The diagonal set of the 9-patches and the big stitch quilting give it a more contemporary look. My friend Jo  at joquilterblog.blogspot.com hand quilted it for me. It was her first big stitch quilt and I think sold us both on big stitch quilting.

Lois' quilt is a scrappy 4 patch with dark bricks in between so it is much darker but another fun way to use scraps. Now I just need to accumulate some scraps. I have none at the moment.

Saw my first robin of the year yesterday. Spring must be on the way!

Mientras leía el blog de una amiga loisarnold.blogspot.com recordé éste colcha de 2001. Todo es de pedazos. El arreglo en diagonal y el alcochando en puntadas grandes hacen la colcha muy contemporáneo. Mi amiga, Jo, la alcochó para mi. Estaba su primero colcha alcochaba en éste manera. Creyo que despues de eso nos gusta éste técnica mucho.

La colcha de Lois es de pedazos también, en vez de 9- patches ella usa 4-patches y ladrillos en colores oscuros. La colcha de ella es más oscuro. Ahora necesito acumularme más pedazos. Al momento no tengo nada.

Yo ví el primer petirrojo del año, ayer. La primavera viene.

Montana - Mexico, a Study in Contrasts!

Went Skiing at Lolo Pass again Sunday. I think this is the most accumulated snow I have seen there. Contrast that with Mexico City this time of year!  This was my favorite season when the jacarandas were in bloom. Their lavendar petals would blanket the ground like snow here.

Esquiamos a Paso Lolo el Domingo pasado. Creyo que éste es la más nieve que hemos visto alla. Contrastas éste con la Ciudad de México en éste temporada! Me encanta las jacarandas. Es mi favorito temporada en México. Los pétalos cubrirían el suelo como nieve aqui.

Remembering Mom - Un Recuerdo de mi Madre

Today is the one year anniversary of Mom's death. She had a stroke the afternoon of the 22nd and died during the night. It is one of those days that I remember vividly and I'm grateful I had the opportunity to talk to her briefly that morning. Hard to believe it has been one year, especially when I think of all the things that have happened in the intervening year. Mom never quilted but she did cross stitch. This is the last cross stitch Mom made for me. Unfortunately she didn't sign or date it like she usually does but it was probably 2008.

It has been a year of loss and remembrance and healing for me and today I have my home filled with flowers and friends. The Woolie group is coming this evening for their monthly meeting and that has been nice to look foreward to. The only thing lacking are my good friends from Mexico who gave me so much support at the time of Mom's death and throughout our time in Mexico.

Hoy es el aniversario de la muerte de mi madre. Ella tenía un ataque de apoplejía el 22 de Febrero por la tarde y murio durante la noche. Es uno de los días que yo recuerdo vívidamente. Estoy muy agradecido que tenía la oportunidad to hablar por teléfono con ella ese manaña. Es dificil creer que un año ha pasado especialmente cuando pienso en todos las cosas que ocurría durante ese año. Mi madre nunca hace colchas pero borda. Éste es la ultima bordado que mi madre hacía para mí. Desafortunadamente no tiene una firma ni un fecha. Creyo que está de 2008.

Éste año ha estado un año de pérdidas, recuerdos y curación para mí y hoy tengo mi casa lleno de flores y amigas. El grupo de amigas que cose con lana va a venir esta noche. La unico cosa que me falta ésta noche es mi buenas amigos de México que me dan tan apoyo cuando mi madre murió y durante todo de nuestro tiempo en México.

We named   
the fish Wanda. Both of these sculptures are by a local Missoula artist. I'd tell you his name but it is buried under the snow. We shoveled 5 more inches this morning.

El pez se llama Wanda. Las dos esculturas son de la misma artista de Missoula. No puedo decirles como se llama porque está de bajo de la nieve. Movamos 5 pulgadas más éste mañana.
